Finding 5 Positives In The Steelers Head Coach Hire

Pittsburgh Steelers fans have mixed opinions on the Steelers’ new head coach, but after his introductory press conference, Yinzers should be ready to go to war for Mike McCarthy. Call it drinking the Kool-Aid or whatever you would like, but the guy is a Pittsburgher to his core. He knows what the fans want, and he’s going to try his best to bring it to them: a seventh Lombardi Trophy. Until then, these are the positive takeaways from the hire.

5. Potential Aaron Rodgers Reunion

McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers spent ten years together with the Green Bay Packers, and now there is a chance we get to see them together in black and yellow. Rodgers is a wildcard personality, so nobody knows what he is going to do next. He could walk away from the game right now if he wants to, and still be a top-five quarterback of all time. If he does want to come back for another season, McCarthy is definitely interested, as he said in his introductory press conference. Rodgers won two NFL MVP awards with McCarthy at the helm in Green Bay.

4. Quick Turnaround

Steelers fans were hoping for a rebuild, but that isn’t happening under Art Rooney II’s watch. He wants to be competitive, and McCarthy likely gives them the best chance to be that. Although he hasn’t had playoff success in a while, his offensive philosophy might be able to get the Steelers over the hump in the postseason. They only scored six points in the playoff game against the Houston Texans. Hopefully, McCarthy’s offense will pack a heavier punch than that. If not, Pittsburgh is in big trouble.

3. A New Offensive Playcaller

It has been a long time since the Steelers have had a proficient playcaller on the offensive side of the ball. McCarthy will offer that to what has felt like a directionless offense for a long time. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that McCarthy is the best offensive mind that Pittsburgh has had since Bruce Arians, who left Pittsburgh in 2011. It won’t be hard for McCarthy to trump the likes of Randy Fichtner, Matt Canada, and Arthur Smith. Steelers fans can expect a bump on the offensive side of the ball.

2. He’s A Yinzer

This one doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things, but having a guy who was born and raised in Pittsburgh is cool. He understands how the city works and the fans’ mentality. Championships are the standard in the Steel City, and McCarthy knows it better than anyone they could have hired. Watching him get choked up in his introductory press conference about how much this opportunity means to him was special. He was once a kid wearing a Steelers jersey, and now he gets to sit at the head of the table.

1. A Quarterback Friendly Environment

If there is one thing McCarthy can do, it is get the best out of his quarterbacks. He has worked with great quarterbacks such as Joe Montana, Brett Favre, Rodgers, and Dak Prescott. The man knows a thing or two about offense. McCarthy mentioned that knowing your quarterback dictates the entire offense. The Steelers would be wise to let McCarthy get his hands on a young quarterback via the NFL Draft. The Steelers’ new coach has also said that he is intrigued by Will Howard.

End Of My Steelers Rant

Every coach has their faults. There is no such thing as a perfect football coach, no matter how far and wide the search goes. McCarthy is the Steelers guy, like it or not. The best thing Steelers fans can do is get behind him and hope he has success. Crying over the hire does nothing for anybody. It’s time to turn things around in the Steel City, which isn’t an easy task, but McCarthy is ready to tackle it. It’s a new day in the Steel City. A new era of Steelers football.
