Former Browns Coach Lands in Los Angeles

As the new league year approaches, teams are shuffling around coaches as they prepare for the new roster to be built in the coming months. Some are hired almost immediately, like New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel. Others, like Liam Coen, became controversial hires late in the process.

But each coach is tasked with building staff, and that sometimes means poaching from other teams and interviewing recently fired minds on either side of the ball.

On Monday, it became clear that a recently fired offensive coordinator will be getting a new gig with the Los Angeles Rams.

The Rams hired former Cleveland Browns coach Alex Van Pelt as their quarterback rumors continue.

Van Pelt was most recently with the New England Patriots, where he was Jerod Mayo’s offensive coordinator for the 2024 season. Of course, Mayo was fired shortly after the season and his staff followed suit, having struggled to find success with promising rookie quarterback Drake Maye.

New England’s offense finished 27th in expected points added per play and 18th in success rate, failing to find any consistent source of explosive plays.

With Cleveland, Van Pelt joined forces with head coach Kevin Stefanski and spent four seasons as a successful offensive coordinator, keeping the offense above water as Baker Mayfield’s tenure ended and the Deshaun Watson era began. In 2023, he was also the Browns’ quarterbacks coach.

Now a senior offensive assistant with the Rams, Van Pelt will join offensive genius Sean McVay and hope to extend the team’s competitive window – with or without quarterback Matthew Stafford.

The veteran played well in 2024 and wants a new deal, and Los Angeles has allowed him to seek a trade partner, first to give the Rams a better-defined market, but also to give the front office an out.

As such, Stafford could be traded – perhaps in some wild world to Cleveland – and Van Pelt’s role could become even more important as the Rams attempt to elevate an inferior quarterback.

The Browns will not play Los Angeles in 2025, but they will visit New England, who hired offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as Van Pelt’s replacement.
