Former Buccaneers QB shares blunt Kyle Trask, Baker Mayfield analysis

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback and current NFL analyst Shaun King clearly thinks the alleged competition involving Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask is essentially over before training camp. 

According to the JoeBucsFan website, King explained during an edition of the VSiN "PrimeTime" program that he has "boots in the ground there in Tampa" and is "getting reports" that lead him to believe Mayfield will start when the Buccaneers open the regular season at the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 10. 

"Kyle Trask stinks," King directly said. "Listen, if Kyle Trask had done anything in practice during his two years backing up Tom Brady, Tampa doesn’t go out and sign Baker Mayfield. He’d have had to have been terrible in practice. Because when you draft a quarterback second round, you want to be right. (General manager) Jason Licht wants that pick to pan out." 

The Buccaneers spent a second-round draft selection to acquire Trask in 2021, and the 25-year-old subsequently spent the bulk of his first two NFL seasons buried on the depth chart beneath Brady and primary backup Blaine Gabbert. In total, Trask attempted nine career regular-season passes before the Buccaneers signed Mayfield to a one-year "prove it" contract early into this offseason. 

King indicated Trask has proven to be a bad draft pick for the 2021 edition of the Buccaneers that were "win now" with Brady in the lineup and for 2023 considering the third-year pro seemingly trails Mayfield in the quarterback battle that will resume during training camp practices. 

Before King shared his take, noteworthy members of the football community such as NFL Network personality David Carr and former Vikings general manager and current CBS Sports contributor Rick Spielman suggested the Tampa Bay starting gig is Mayfield's to lose more than it is Trask's to win. 

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles said last week he may not announce a final decision until after camp concludes, but outsiders sound convinced there's already little drama regarding that choice.
