Former Cowboys starter on the roster bubble breathes a sigh of relief following latest message from Brian Schottenheimer

Coaching changes can be tough on NFL players. But for Dallas Cowboys linebacker Damone Clark, it looks like defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus' arrival is already saving himself from losing his spot on the roster.

Last year, Clark was benched by Mike Zimmer as the linebacker didn't fit the scheme. In 2023, Clark started 17 games for Dan Quinn. One year later, he could barely get on the field even when the Cowboys LB room was hit hard with injuries.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer made some comments on Tuesday that likely have Clark breathing a sigh of relief.

"Yeah, picked it up (the system) fast," Schottenheimer said about Clark. "I think the way he's diagnosing things looks quicker to me than maybe in the past. A little bit more command of it. The physical traits have always been there."

As always with a new coaching staff, a large part of cracking the 53-man roster is being well liked by the coaches and forming a connection with them.

"And I think the connection that he has with (defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus), (LB coach Dave Borgonzi)—I think that's important," Schottenheimer added. "I know most guys are that way, but I think Damone, he's such a pleaser, he wants to do things the right way. That relationship that he's developed with Dave Borganzi is incredible. And again, that's what this time of year is about."

The comments from Schottenheimer are even more noteworthy when considering the Cowboys front office added Jack Sanborn and Kenneth Murray before the NFL Draft, and then picked Shemar James in the fifth round, significantly increasing the competition in the room

There's a long way to go before Clark secures his place on the roster but for now, it sure seems like Schottenheimer's message was the perfect pre-practice boost, as he picked off Joe Milton moments later.
