Former Dolphins QB Reveals Thoughts on Potential Zach Sieler Extension

Miami Dolphins' edge rusher Zach Sieler has broken out over the last two seasons to become a top-10 edge rusher in the NFL. However, the Dolphins signed Sieler to a three-year extension in 2023, which looks like an absolute steal at the moment.

Sieler was a seventh-round draft pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2018 and came to Miami in 2019. In 2020, Sieler worked his way into starting games and put up a productive three years for the Dolphins, accumulating 180 tackles, 24 TFLs, and nine sacks.

The Dolphins rewarded Sieler with his three-year, $30.75 million extension in 2023. In the last two years, Sieler has become one of the league's most productive edge rushers. The former seventh-round pick has collected 10 sacks over the previous two seasons, 24 TFLs, 41 quarterback hits, and 118 tackles. He's also defended six passes, forced two fumbles, recovered three fumbles, and collected two interceptions, including a pick-six.

Sieler enters a unique position as training camp gets underway. He could easily hold out for a new, restructured contract that more accurately pays for the production he's provided the last two seasons. However, the star edge rusher has been a full participant in all offseason activities.

Former Dolphins quarterback and teammate of Sieler's, Ryan Fitzpatrick, recently voiced his opinion on Sieler's contract situation in a post on X.

To Fitzpatrick's point, the top 10 highest-paid edge rushers in the NFL all make over $20 million per year. Sieler's teammate, Bradley Chubb, is No. 10 on the list, making $22 million per year.

Chubb and Sieler led the Dolphins with 11 TFLs in 2023, and Chubb had one more sack than Sieler that season. However, in 2024, Chubb missed the entire season with an injury, and Sieler led the team in both categories and was named team MVP.

Sieler has proved his worth for the Dolphins over the last two years and deserves to be paid for it. However, recently, the Dolphins have not shown the willingness to do so for their star players. We'll just have to wait and see if Sieler holds out for a new, restructured contract or if he plays through another year on his current deal.
