With roster cuts across the NFL finalized, the Green Bay Packers are now looking to make any desired moves on the waiver wire. For one former wide receiver, it didn’t take long to find a new team following his release from the Seattle Seahawks.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling played with the Packers for four seasons, and was one of Aaron Rodgers’ more prominent weapons over that stretch. He had over 2,000 receiving yards and found the end zone on 13 occasions. Since his last snaps with Green Bay in 2021, MVS has bounced around the league, spending time in Kansas City, Buffalo, and New Orleans. In 2025, he entered training camp as a member of the Seattle Seahawks.
On Tuesday’s roster cuts day , Valdes-Scantling was released by the team. Following the emergence of Seattle’s rookie fifth-round pick Tory Horton, MVS found himself in a battle with two former late-round picks, Jake Bobo and Dareke Young. However, given both of their importance on special teams, the 30-year-old Valdes-Scantling was found to be the odd man out.

However, it didn’t take long for Valdes-Scantling to find his footing again. On Wednesday, he agreed to a deal with the San Francisco 49ers.

San Francisco is notably dealing with an injury crisis in their wide receiver room. The team currently has star wideout Brandon Aiyuk on the Physically Unable to Perform list due to a knee issue. Their other main target, Juaun Jennings, has a calf problem that could mean he will miss time in the regular season. Additionally, reserve players Jacob Cowing, Trent Taylor, and Jordan Watkins are all out injured as well.
Valdes-Scantling now joins a receiving corps currently led by second-year pro Ricky Pearsall and recently acquired Skyy Moore. Ironically enough, Valdes-Scantling’s first action with the 49ers will come in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks.
