Former New York Jets quarterback and current "The NFL Today" analyst Boomer Esiason hasn't been the biggest supporter of current Jets starter Zach Wilson this fall but suggested on Monday that Wilson could find success via a fresh start elsewhere.
"I think for this young man, he needs to get the hell out of here and go play somewhere else, simply because this is just gonna come crashing down on top of him," Esiason said about Wilson during Monday's edition of the WFAN "Boomer and Gio" program, per Ryan Chichester of Audacy. "It’s not all his fault, but I do understand why people are frustrated with him…He is tantalizing, and you can see why he’s tantalizing."
During Sunday's 16-12 loss at the Las Vegas Raiders that dropped the Jets to 4-5, Wilson made a handful of highlight-reel plays with his arm and his legs. He also threw a costly interception with fewer than 90 seconds remaining in regulation after he stared his target down.
In total, Wilson completed 23-of-39 passes for 263 yards with no touchdowns and one pick. He tossed one touchdown pass across New York's last five games, a short throw taken to the house by running back Breece Hall in Week 8.
"You see the arm strength. You see the ability," Esiason added about Wilson. "When he runs with the football, you can see how fast he is. That last Hail Mary, very few players in the league can get that throw off."
Wilson is only playing in November because Aaron Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles in Week 1 that could keep him out through Week 18 if the Jets lose a few more games before the halfway point of December arrives. Rodgers accepted a significant pay cut this past summer to help the Jets build around him for a minimum of two seasons, and his status coupled with Wilson's play theoretically could result in the franchise parting ways with the third-year pro before next year's draft.
Also on Monday, head coach Robert Saleh confirmed Wilson will start for this coming Sunday's game at the 5-4 Buffalo Bills.
Robert Saleh is asked if the Jets are going to make any changes offensively after this week:
