Former Notre Dame star eyeing a second chance, and he could have some really intriguing options on the table for a career revival

Former Notre Dame legend Isaiah Foskey was dealt with some difficult news recently when it was announced he was being released by the New Orleans Saints. Heading into his third NFL season, the former second round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft has struggled to make his mark in the NFL. Foskey are not being able to latch on in a less than stellar Saints defensive end room isn’t a good sign.

Despite that early run of underwhelming, it appears that another chance could be on the horizon for Foskey. The 6-5, 270-pound pass rusher will be working out for the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles this week. It will be interesting to see if a contract offer, or two, come with an impressive showing.

A second chance for Foskey

From the Bears' perspective, there does appear to be a need for defensive end depth. Montez Sweat and Dayo Odeyingbo are projected to be the starters, but the players behind them are pretty questionable. As of today, Dominique Robinson and Daniel Hardy will serve as the main backups. That can obviously be upgraded.

The Eagles are another intriguing landing spot potentially for Foskey. They had to say goodbye to Pro Bowl pass rusher Josh Sweat this offseason, and will now be relying on Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt to make a significant impact. Behind them, the Eagles have veterans Joshua Uche, Azeez Ojulari, and Ogbo Okoronkwo trying to find a role as key rotational players. Foskey does bring a very different body type to the table, comparatively.

During his four years in South Bend, Foskey managed to collect 122 total tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 26.5 sacks, and seven forced fumbles. Those numbers were especially impressive considering that Foskey only played in four games as a true freshman in 2019 to maintain his eligibility.

The New Orleans Saints took a chance on upside despite inconsistency on film, selecting the California native with the No. 40 overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. A lot was expected from Foskey with his ability to get after the quarterback, but that production never materialized, and he was almost unbelievably poor in limited opportunities.

During his two years with the Saints, Foskey managed to collect just 25 total tackles, zero tackles for loss, and no sacks in 27 games. He was an absolute non factor for a defense that needed him desperately, but failed to make an impact.

Let’s hope that impact comes with wherever Foskey’s next stop is.
