The Green Bay Packers confirmed Wednesday that one of their former players and current member of the board of directors passed away this month.
In 1982, the Packers selected former SMU kicker Eddie Garcia. He handled kickoff duties for Green Bay before becoming the primary kicker. During the 1984 season, he made three of nine field goal attempts. In September 1984, he made a career-long 51-yard field goal against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Before retiring from the NFL, Garcia spent the 1985 season with the Miami Dolphins.
Unfortunately, the NFL community learned that Garcia has died at the age of 65. He passed away on June 5 at his home in Poygan, Wisconsin.
"Outside of his work, Eddie loved to travel the world, and then relax in Florida during the cold winters with his wife of 40 years and partner in adventure, Jill," Garcia's obituary states. "He also loved to watch endless soccer games, and was an expert at yelling 'GOALLLL!' just like the announcers do. In the last several years, Eddie spent lots of time with his family, which includes his loving daughters Susan (Jim) and Katherine (Paul), and his adoring grandson Oscar, who loved his Papi dearly. Eddie will be remembered by his close family as immensely kind, generous, and funny (sometimes intentionally, sometimes unintentionally)."
Garcia spent the post-football chapter of his life working in sales and marketing. He was a senior director for Oshkosh Corporation.
In 2021, Garcia returned to Green Bay to join the Packers Board of Directors. The former NFL kicker was part of the sales and marketing committee.
Our thoughts are with the Garcia family at this time.
