Former Steelers Quarterback Russell Wilson Definitely Wanted To Stay In Pittsburgh 'Right Up Till The End'

The Pittsburgh Steelers organization possesses a deeply rooted culture, characterized by strong leadership, a commitment to player development, and a tradition of success. These attributes combine to create a highly desirable environment for players, fostering a sense of loyalty and a desire to remain within the organization. This positive environment, coupled with the passionate support of the Steelers' fan base, contributes to the team's reputation as a place where players want to build their careers.

According to a recent report from an insider with close ties to the Steelers, this appeal was evident in the case of a former Steelers player. This individual reportedly harbored a strong desire to remain in Pittsburgh throughout the negotiation process. This player's preference to stay with the Steelers persisted until the very moment he ultimately signed a contract with another team. This indicates that the player had a strong desire to remain with the Steelers, and that the organization's culture had a positive impact. Gerry Dulac, a Steelers insider and writer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, revealed via a post on X that the player in question was quarterback Russell Wilson.

Wilson's brief time with the Steelers involved a one-year contract for $1.2 million, with the Denver Broncos, his former team, covering a substantial portion of his salary. His insertion into the Steelers' starting lineup generated a range of reactions from fans and analysts. Following recovery from a calf injury by Week 7 in 2024, his return to the field resulted in Justin Fields being moved to the bench, despite Fields having steered the team to a promising 4-2 start. Across his 11 starts, Wilson accumulated 2,482 passing yards, threw 16 touchdowns, and recorded 5 interceptions. His performance contributed to the Steelers securing a playoff berth, and also earned him a Pro Bowl selection.

Wilson's newly negotiated contract with the Giants bears a slight resemblance to the deal recently secured by his former teammate. Fields, who also departed the Steelers, signed a two-year contract with the New York Jets, valued at $40 million. Interestingly, Wilson's destination is the other NFL team that shares MetLife Stadium with the Jets: the Giants. According to reports, Wilson's agreement is a one-year contract, with a potential value reaching up to $21 million. Within this deal, $10.5 million is guaranteed, providing him with a substantial financial safety net for the upcoming season.

Does This Change The Steelers' Strategy About Acquiring Rodgers?

The Steelers' apparent disinterest in retaining Wilson, despite his expressed interest, remains a mystery, with no official explanation provided. However, rumors have circulated regarding potential friction between Wilson and Steelers' Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith.

The Steelers' continued patience in awaiting Rodgers' decision suggests a strong confidence in their pursuit of the veteran quarterback. Rodgers' recent visit to the Steelers' facilities on Friday fueled speculation of an imminent deal, though no official agreement has happened. It appears that the Wilson situation doesn't seem to have impacted the Rodgers situation. The Steelers weren't going to re-sign Wilson in the first place.

However, the departure of Wilson might instill a sense of urgency within the Steelers' organization to solidify their roster, particularly with the 2025 NFL Draft less than a month away. The team may feel a need to have a clear quarterback plan in place before then.
