Former Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman 'didn't get a call' before Buccaneers signed Cole Beasley

Tom Brady had some big-name and big-bodied receiving options during his days with the New England Patriots in wide receiver Randy Moss (6-foot-4) and tight end Rob Gronkowski (6-foot-6). He also utilized the likes of a couple of well-known undersized slot receivers over the years, helping turn Wes Welker (5-foot-9) into a five-time Pro Bowler and Julian Edelman (5-foot-10) into a three-time Super Bowl champion and Super Bowl LIII MVP.

Now in his third season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with "Gronk" having retired (again) over the offseason and his current cast of wide receivers on the proverbial sidelines with an array of injuries (and one suspension), Brady is looking for some help again. Enter longtime Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills slot receiver Cole Beasley (5-foot-8), who the Buccaneers just signed to their practice squad.

While it is not yet known if and when Beasley will see playing time on gamedays for Tampa Bay, it's obvious that there is a need in the Bucs receivers' room and the 33-year-old could be a great fit. Edelman -- who has teased multiple times of a potential comeback out of his own retirement -- spoke with "Inside the NFL" recently about Tampa Bay reaching out to the 33-year-old SMU product.

The 36-year-old did not seem thrilled with how thing went down.

Beasley set a career-high with 112 targets in 2021 with Buffalo and matched his career-high in receptions with 82, while going for 693 receiving yards and one touchdown. Edelman last suited up in 2020, recording 21 receptions for 315 scoreless yards on 39 targets in six games.
