Four potentially enticing NFL Thanksgiving games for 2024
Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

The NFL and Thanksgiving are two things that just go together. While fans enjoy food, family, and football, an added bonus is getting good games to watch for this holiday. Any NFL fan knows that the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys are two teams that traditionally play on Thanksgiving.

While we may not know their exact schedules, we do know the opponents for both teams next year. The Green Bay Packers and Washington Commanders also likely will not play on Thanksgiving this season due to facing the Lions and Cowboys last year on Thanksgiving.

So, who will the Lions and Cowboys play this year? Here are four of some of the most enticing possibilities.

1. Detroit Lions vs. Chicago Bears

This is easily the most enticing Thanksgiving matchup of any possibility on the board. The reason why is the Chicago Bears just drafted QB Caleb Williams. Big things are expected from Williams and the Bears in 2024.

If fans and experts are right about Chicago, a Thanksgiving matchup between these two old rivals could potentially reignite the rivalry. It helps that the Lions are coming off of an appearance in the NFC Championship game. However, this is not the only enticing division rivalry on the board.

2. Dallas Cowboys vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Another potential division rivalry game that could be played on Thanksgiving is the Dallas Cowboys vs. Philadelphia Eagles. What is interesting about these two teams is how last year ended for both of them. Dallas and Philadelphia each suffered surprising losses in the wild card round of the playoffs. As a result, the Cowboys became the first 2-seed to lose to a 7-seed in the NFL playoff history.

On top of this, the Cowboys took the NFC East title from the Eagles during the last week of the season. It is safe to say that the Eagles are likely going to want some redemption this season.

3. Detroit Lions vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Lions won a thriller against the Buccaneers in the divisional round of last year’s playoffs. Thanksgiving could be a great excuse to put a rematch on national television.

This may not be the most obvious game to put in this slate. That is because the Lions also play the Los Angeles Rams at home next season. However, that matchup is much more likely to be put on Sunday Night Football. Because of this, putting the Buccaneers on Thanksgiving could allow the NFL to get another good playoff rematch on national television.

4. Dallas Cowboys vs. Houston Texans

Finally, the Cowboys have an extra home game this season against the Texans. There are a few things going for a potential Thanksgiving clash.

First, the Texans are coming off of a great season. Led by rookie QB C.J. Stroud, they will likely be in the national spotlight frequently next season. On top of this, Dallas vs. Houston can be advertised as the battle of Texas. Even if it is not on Thanksgiving, this is likely going to be a game on national television.
