Four Takeaways from Jaguars’ Initial Unofficial Depth Chart

The top of the running back depth chart has not yet been decided, as the initial depth chart lists either Bhayshul Tuten or Chris Rodriguez Jr. as the starter. This is the first of two “OR”s on the chart that will be discussed. That is a testament to what Rodriguez has shown in his limited time on the field, as he was still working back from surgery on his left foot following an injury sustained with the Washington Commanders. The Jaguars are expected to be a team that relies on the running game, so is this a sign that this will be more of a committee approach? Or are we going to have to wait for either Tuten or Rodriguez to break away?

Faith in Starting Offensive Line Unit to Return Healthy?

In the initial depth chart, two things felt certain along the offensive line, based on the start of training camp: Robert Hainsey was playing center, and Anton Harrison was sticking at left tackle. The other three spots were grab bags. For the time being, at least, it seems that Walker Little, Patrick Mekari and Ezra Cleveland have all held off any would-be jumps to the starting lineup from guys like Emmanuel Pregnon, Chuma Edoga and Wyatt Milum. Is this more a signal of how much faith Coen has in his starters or a referendum on how the backups have not done enough to take the reins, despite the opportunity?

Branson Combs Is Officially a Contender for Starting LB

Ventrell Miller has had a stellar camp, and even with that, there’s that massive “OR” between his name and former undrafted free agent out of Wake Forest, Branson Combs. Combs has been balling out in his own right at the start of camp, and has clawed his way into the starting conversation. His play in these joint practices will be key, as starters will not be playing much in preseason action.

Ruke Orhorhoro Fighting to Make the Roster

One of the moves that felt like a solid pickup this offseason for the Jaguars was the player-swap with the Atlanta Falcons , giving up Maason Smith for Ruke Orhorhoro. Smith has given the Falcons the interior run-stopper they were looking for in camp, while Ruke seems to be pushed to the dreaded third-string designation and will be seeing meaningful snaps in the preseason, as his spot on the roster certainly does not feel secure.
