FPC Chiefs News Roundup: Spagnuolo, Jones, Super Bowl Parade
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs have now joined the rest of the NFL in moving towards the 2024 offseason. But after winning Super Bowl LVIII, the team had won last day of celebration to remember the most recent season. Wednesday featured the third Super Bowl parade in Kansas City over the last five years. Beyond that, the Chiefs announced some significant news regarding their coaching staff. And finally, a key pending free agent appeared to make a major proclamation on Wednesday.

With Super Bowl and championship content wrapping up for this week, now is the time for an edition of the FPC Chiefs News Roundup. What is the latest on Steve Spagnuolo as Kansas City defensive coordinator? Can we take the words of Chris Jones legitimately from yesterday? Plus, we will look into highlights from Wednesday’s Super Bowl Parade. Let’s kick it off.

Spagnuolo Inks New Contract Extension

Before the Super Bowl parade on Wednesday, the Kansas City Chiefs announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, some exciting news. That would be that defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo had been signed to a new contract extension. In reality, Spagnuolo probably was not in danger of going anywhere else. But for Kansas City and Chiefs fans as a whole, the fact that he is officially locked up further is assuring.

Spagnuolo has been the Chiefs defensive coordinator for all three of the recent Super Bowl wins. Together with general manager Brett Veach and others, he has been a major part of rebuilding the KC defense a couple of different times. The Chiefs had one of the best defenses in the NFL in 2023. Overall, Kansas City’s defense finished the regular season ranked second in yards allowed and second in points allowed. Fast forward to the playoff run, and Spagnuolo’s defense allowed just 63 points, or 15.75 points per game, in the four playoff games. So many young pieces have already shined for the Chiefs defense. And now, Spagnuolo can continue to build that dominant unit even more.

Chris Jones: “I’m Not Going Anywhere”

Nothing is necessarily close or imminent, in terms of a new contract extension between the Chiefs and defensive tackle Chris Jones. But at yesterday’s rally near the end of the Super Bowl parade, Jones made an interesting proclamation with the microphone in his hands.

“For those that want Chris Jones gone, I ain’t going nowhere, baby! I will be here next year and the year after!”

By him uttering those words, you would have to think both sides will work harder again this offseason to get him signed to an extension. Can we take those words legitimately, though? Time will tell if Jones will ultimately get the contract value that he was reportedly seeking last year. But in the end, there appears to be a sense that Jones wants to spend his entire career with Kansas City. The Chiefs will have to decide again soon on what offers they are willing to extend him.

Super Bowl Parade Highlights

There were a lot of fun moments throughout the Chiefs Super Bowl parade yesterday. Like past years, many players were walking in the streets during the parade route. Those players would end up signing autographs, high-fiving fans and got the crowd buzzing in other various ways. Here were a few highlights that stood out during the parade.

Linebacker Willie Gay is seen as one of the top hype men on the team, if not the best one, overall. Gay was energetically getting the crowd pumped up. For instance, he would wind his arms and put his hands up to his ear, as if he were Hulk Hogan, to get the crowd louder. He also took off running down the streets and gave some great soundbites to local reporters.

Another linebacker, Drue Tranquill, was quick with some of his soundbites. Though, his words were certainly endearing to the crowd. “This is way better than LA,” Tranquill said. Of course, this was a reference to the Chargers, a division rival of the Chiefs and Tranquill’s original NFL team. After coming from LA to Kansas City in free agency last year, he learned what it was like to be on the right side of the Chiefs-Chargers rivalry. After stepping up in key moments and winning his first Super Bowl, Tranquill was soaking it all in.

Other soundbites from Isiah Pacheco and Nick Allegretti got the crowd going on the parade route. Players were drinking their adult beverages while riding the shoulders of teammates. And elsewhere, talks of a three-peat have already surfaced when players took the mic on the stage near the end of the event. It was a fun celebration, once again, for another Super Bowl championship.

Celebration Turns Into Heartbreak

Unfortunately, a day of celebration took a disappointing turn towards heartbreak. Just as the Chiefs Super Bowl parade and rally was wrapping up on the stage at Union Station, a commotion ensued. Gunshots were fired and multiple people in the crowd were struck. Dozens of police officers responded quickly in and around Union Station. Sadly, there were over 15 reported victims that were affected by the shooting.

Players and coaches were reportedly calming people down before they left Union Station. Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and many others took to X to tweet out that their thoughts were with the victims and the city.

“Praying for Kansas City,” Mahomes posted. Kelce posted, “I am heartbroken over the tragedy that took place today. My heart is with all who came out to celebrate with us and have been affected. KC, you mean the world to me.”

We at FPC Chiefs are hoping for a speedy recovery for the victims and all of those that were affected.
