Gable Steveson’s transition to mixed martial arts was one of the most anticipated debuts in recent years and he didn’t disappoint. The Olympic gold medalist wrestler made quick work of Braden Peterson in the main event of LFA 217 at Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake, Minnesota, earning a TKO victory at 1:38 of Round 1.
With training partner and former UFC champion Jon Jones in his corner. Steveson (1-0) wasted no time showcasing his elite wrestling pedigree. A lightning-fast single-leg takedown sent Peterson (1-1) to the mat, where Steveson methodically transitioned between control and damage. After softening Peterson with elbows and teasing a submission attempt. Steveson unleashed a barrage of punches from top position until the referee stepped in.
At just 25, Steveson has already lived several athletic lives. He captured freestyle wrestling gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Solidifying himself as one of the greatest American heavyweights in amateur wrestling history. Following that triumph, he signed with WWE to pursue a career in professional wrestling, though the partnership never fully materialized.
Steveson also tried his hand at football, briefly signing with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills as a defensive player before being released. He returned to the University of Minnesota to add more wrestling accolades before finally committing to MMA a move fans had speculated about since his Olympic victory.
While Peterson wasn’t the toughest test Steveson will face. The performance was exactly what fans expected: dominance through world-class grappling, coupled with powerful ground-and-pound. The question now becomes how quickly the Minnesota native will ascend through the MMA ranks.
With his Olympic background, crossover appeal, and support from Jon Jones, Gable Steveson has the potential to become a marquee name in the heavyweight division and his flawless debut suggests he’s ready for the spotlight.
