Friday night brought plenty of excitement in the NFL despite just three games on the schedule. The Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers matchup grabbed most of the attention, largely because of rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
The former Colorado Buffaloes star impressed in his preseason debut, throwing two touchdowns while starting for the Browns. His performance is sure to spark more conversation as training camp rolls on through August, especially with fans eager to see how the fifth-round pick stacks up against other rookie quarterbacks.
Even the NFL’s social media accounts highlighted Sanders, sharing his sideline interaction with star defensive end Myles Garrett, captioned:
“fully supporting his guy .”
Sanders got the start over Tyler Huntley, with both being the only quarterbacks to take snaps for Cleveland. Veteran Joe Flacco, 40, is projected to be the team’s starter when the season begins.
Sanders also saw extra playing time because Dillon Gabriel and Kenny Pickett sat out with injuries. Pickett is listed as the Browns’ No. 2 quarterback, while Gabriel, another rookie, is third on the depth chart.
Sanders’ NFL journey began in the 2025 draft, where many analysts expected him to be taken in the first or second round. Instead, he fell to the fifth round with five quarterbacks selected ahead of him. Tennessee took Cam Ward with the top overall pick, followed by Jaxson Dart, Tyler Shough, Jalen Milroe and Gabriel.
Defensive star Myles Garrett, 29, is set for his ninth year with the Browns. In 117 career regular-season games, he has racked up 102.5 sacks. After recording 16 sacks in back-to-back seasons, he posted 14 in each of the last two years.
Garrett was one of the few bright spots in Cleveland’s 3-14 season a year ago. In the offseason, he requested a trade after failing to reach a new deal with the front office. Just over a month later, he signed a four-year, $160 million extension with $123.5 million guaranteed, averaging $40 million per season. The contract also includes a no-trade clause.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski has not given a timeline for Garrett’s game time, and it’s possible fans won’t see him in any preseason action. Cleveland visits the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles on Aug. 16, then faces the Los Angeles Rams the following week to close out the preseason.
The Browns open the regular season on Sept. 7 at home against the Cincinnati Bengals.
