Former West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene has transitioned to wide receiver with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after signing as an undrafted free agent.
Greene played five seasons at WVU as quarterback (2020-2024), appearing in 45 games and making 27 starts.
He finished his college career with 5,370 passing yards, 36 passing touchdowns, and 19 interceptions, while adding 2,128 rushing yards and 28 rushing touchdowns.
The former Mountaineer was named Honorable Mention All-Big 12 in 2023 after leading the Mountaineers to a 9-4 record and a Duke’s Mayo Bowl win over UNC.
He was a three-star recruit out of Tallahassee, Florida. At 5-foot-10, 202 pounds, his size and athletic profile drew limited NFL quarterback interest, prompting the position change before training camp.
In his first NFL preseason appearance, Greene recorded two receptions for 22 yards, which was the second most on the team.
He also returned one punt for 17 yards against the Tennessee Titans, showing his versatility as a football player at the professional level.
Tampa Bay’s receiver group includes veterans Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, rookie first-round pick Emeka Egbuka, and newcomer Tez Johnson. The Buccaneers could keep up to six or seven receivers on the 53-man roster.
With two preseason games remaining, Greene is competing for either a final roster spot or a position on the practice squad. His versatility as a receiver and returner could increase his value in roster decisions later this month.
Tampa Bay will take on the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2 of the NFL preseason on Saturday, Aug. 16.
