General Manager George Paton Shares Thoughts on Broncos Draft Position

In the Denver Broncos' pre-draft press conference, when asked about the draft and the Broncos' pick, George Paton gave some thoughts that are very telling about what the Broncos' draft day plan may be. As reported by Broncos beat writer Zac Stevens, Paton said, "We feel there will be a similar player at 20 as there will be at 10."

This pretty much shuts down talks of the Broncos trading up. If they value their pick the same as the 10th pick then they most likely won't trade up unless they want a top five pick and the price for that may be hefty. This pretty much solidifies the Broncos staying with their pick, or maybe even trading down if they feel they can still get similar players at the end of the first or early second.

If the Broncos stay with their pick, they will most likely target the best running back available, whether it is Ashton Jeanty, Omarion Hampton, or TreVeyon Henderson. If not, they may target the best available receiver, whether it is Tetairoa McMillan, Matthew Golden, or Emeka Egbuka. They could even target a tight end like Colston Loveland or a cornerback like Will Johnson or Jahdae Barron.

Getting an offensive weapon to surround Bo Nix seems to the Broncos main priority so it does seem that a running back or wide receiver is the most likely case. However they have been linked to drafting tight ends and cornerbacks in the offseason and could go that direction if they really like a prospect that slides to their pick.

If the Broncos end up wanting to trade down, the Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Washington Commanders could potentially all be trade partners to get a later first-round pick. The New England Patriots, Chicago Bears, and the New York Jets could also be options if they want to explore dipping into the early second round.

The Broncos could still get elite prospects at the end of the first round or the beginning of the second round. They recently had Ohio State running back Quinshon Judkins in for a visit, and Cam Skattebo or Devin Neal could be options as well for the last first to early second round. Tre Harris, Luther Burden III, and Jack Bech are late first to late second-round receivers as well.

They also could end up getting some more draft capital or a solid player as the kicker for the trade to move down. Other teams that hear these comments that have interested in moving up in the first or getting a second first round pick will likely contact the Broncos if they want to make a move.

It is almost draft time, and the Broncos sound like they have made up their mind on what they want to do. This is a very deep draft class, and the Broncos could still get a quality player at pick 20 to pick 40. Now it will come down to who is available when pick 20 is on the clock, and if it is enough for the Broncos to stay put.
