For Geno Smith's first preseason game with the Las Vegas Raiders, he had to face his former team, the Seattle Seahawks. Most fans met him with applause, but not every fan was as kind.
One fan near the tunnel that the Raiders ran out of held a sign that read, "Bigger bust — Geno or JaMarcus Russell.” Smith saw the sign and decided to flip a middle finger at the fan.
Star defensive end Maxx Crosby followed his quarterback's lead and did the same thing. While Raiders fans are hyped about Crosby having Smith's back, the players may wish they hadn't done that in hindsight.
Needless to say, the NFL doesn't like it when players make obscene gestures to fans during games. Last year, Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch flipped off Green Bay Packers fans during a regular season game and was fined $10,128 for it.
While this was a preseason game, the NFL will almost certainly punish Smith and Crosby for the obscene gestures. It remains to be seen if they'll get fined as much as Branch did, considering this was a preseason game, but it's hard to imagine they won't get some sort of slap on the wrist.
Though the Raiders haven't named team captains yet, Crosby and Smith will be two of the choices. Based on the interaction before the Seahawks game, the two are going to have each other's backs this season.
It's not great to have players flipping off fans, but it sends a message to the rest of the team that Crosby and Smith aren't going to back down. It may lead to some fines, but luckily for Smith and Crosby, they both got massive contract extensions this offseason.
