Geno Smith unveils eye-catching new look at practice

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is living it up at training camp. He has made it a point to stand out above the rest.

That was obvious when he showed up to camp on Thursday, donning red contact lenses, per Rich Cimini. It turns out that Smith wore these specific contact lenses to fight back against the glare of the sun on the field. He was asked about it by a reporter in the presser, who told Smith the new look was a bit scary.

But Smith was determined.

“It’s actually pretty cool,” Smith said. “It blocks out the sunlight and all that, so it’s actually pretty cool. It keeps the glare from the sun out of your eyes.”

At the same time, while others are seeing red, Smith is seeing something else.

“The entire room is yellow, so it’s a yellow tint to everything,” Smith said. “But yeah, it’s pretty cool. You guys should try it.”

The inspiration for the red contact lenses came from his former Jets teammate Santonio Holmes. Holmes began using red contact lenses a decade ago. Also, Smith got the green light after consulting with eye doctors.

“It’s just something we’re trying out, just to see what it’s like,” Smith said. “I like it, so we’ve been sticking with it.”

Smith is coming off a difficult season and problematic offseason. He finished with an 84.7 passer rating and threw 17 interceptions. In the offseason, Smith faced accusations of assault from his ex-girlfriend, and the investigation was classified as inactive for now.
