George Pickens is staying in Dallas, at least for now. The Dallas Cowboys confirmed Wednesday that Pickens has signed his franchise tag, locking him in for the 2026 season at $27.3 million.
The timing raised a few eyebrows since the news dropped just hours before the NFL Draft kicked off, fueling outside chatter about a possible trade. The Cowboys pushed back on that quickly and made clear they were actually happy Pickens signed when he did.
His signature also means he will be present for mandatory minicamp in June, keeping him clear of any fines tied to unexcused absences. Veterans were already beginning to arrive at the facility for voluntary workouts when the deal was finalized.

At $27.3 million in cash earnings for 2026, Pickens slots in at sixth among the league's highest-paid wide receivers this season, per Spotrac.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba leads the group at $36.5 million, followed by Ja'Marr Chase at $33.83 million and Alec Pierce at $30 million. A.J. Brown sits fourth at $29 million and Amon-Ra St. Brown is fifth at $28.11 million.
Behind Pickens are Brandon Aiyuk at $27 million, CeeDee Lamb at $26 million, Justin Jefferson at $25.75 million and D.K. Metcalf at $25 million.
The 25-year-old earned every bit of that number after a career year. Pickens finished the season with 93 receptions, good for eighth in the league, 1,429 receiving yards which ranked third and nine touchdown catches which tied for eighth. All three were career highs and built a strong case for a long-term deal.
The franchise tag is step one. What comes next is where things tend to get complicated. Pickens has been vocal about wanting to stay in Dallas and a big part of that comes down to the relationships he has built there.
His connection with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb has grown into something real, and he has spent considerable time with Lamb this offseason. The bond with the coaching staff has added to that comfort.
For a player who carried a complicated reputation during his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas has clearly been a different experience.
Pickens’ agent David Mulugheta will now work toward a long-term extension. The question is whether a deal gets done before training camp, or if this stretches into the summer. Cowboys fans have reason to feel good about where things stand right now.
