George Pickens Update Emerges Amid NFL Offseason

George Pickens will be on the Dallas Cowboys for the 2026 NFL season due to his signing of a $27.3 million franchise tag over the offseason. With star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb hampered by a high ankle sprain, Pickens was electric for Dallas last season. The 6-foot-3 wide receiver finished eighth in the NFL in receptions (93), third in yards (1,429), tied for eighth in touchdowns (9) and seventh in average yards per catch (15.4).

On Tuesday, on the Up & Adams Show, James Palmer, an NFL reporter for Bleacher Report, was asked by host Kay Adams about the likelihood of an extension for Pickens by the Cowboys.

Palmer responded bluntly that he believes there is little to no chance the extension happens. Palmer also implied there was a reason the talented receiver was available in the first place, that the franchise tag was always intended to be used after the trade, and that the Cowboys need to see more from Pickens.

“I think it’s close to zero,” Palmer said. “I really do. I haven’t heard anything from that building during this entire time that they were planning on giving him a contract extension. I really hadn’t, and it’s for a few reasons. They know, and George knows this ... there was a reason he was drafted where he was drafted because of Georgia. There was a reason why the Cowboys were the only team offering a trade for him ... and they got him for a third-round pick because of what happened in Pittsburgh. Now they liked what they saw for a year, but it’s still a small sample in Stephen and Jerry Jones’ eyes ...”

“... The $27 million tag was always kind of the plan,” Palmer continued. “They think they can have the best offense in football this year ... I just think they need to see more. I think there have been some conversations of, ‘If we traded him, what could we get?’ I think those have been more frequent than a contract extension.”

Dallas will start the season on the road at MetLife Stadium on Sunday Night Football against the New York Giants at 8:20 p.m. ET.
