Malik Nabers was not in attendance for the New York Giants’ introductory press conference for new head coach John Harbaugh. Nabers, however, took his share of the spotlight as the organization officially opened the Harbaugh era in New York.
Nabers suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers. The second-year wide receiver tore the ACL and meniscus in his right knee. He underwent surgery in late October and has since been undergoing an intensive rehab program to get himself ready for the new season.
Giants general manager Joe Schoen provided an update on Nabers’ road to recovery during Tuesday’s press conference.
Schoen had an optimistic update on Nabers, who finished his second season with 35 catches for 271 yards and two touchdowns. The Giants GM, however, remained non-committal about Nabers’ timetable.
"Malik is trending to hopefully be ready for training camp," Schoen said. "Things can change ... but that's the hope."
Training camp typically starts in late July. This gives Nabers six more months to get back into shape, with the hope of being ready for the start of the 2026 season. Schoen’s statement, however, indicates that the Giants have refused to commit to a firm timetable for Nabers’ highly anticipated return.
Harbaugh spoke highly of the Pro Bowl wide receiver. The new head coach expressed his excitement to work with Nabers once Nabers returns to the field.
"I had a chance to talk to Malik on the phone," Harbaugh said. "It was great. He was training out in LA, rehabbing out there for a week or whatever it was and working hard. I just love talking to him. His joy and excitement, he had some really good ideas, he's really a thoughtful guy.
“Obviously, saw him coming out (of LSU). He wasn't a guy we had a chance for, so it was like, 'Well, look at this guy, he's really good.' Just kind of a dream. I figured we might have to cover him someday, and here we are, we get a chance to coach him. So I'm really excited about it."
While there is still a lot of uncertainty surrounding Nabers’ recovery, Schoen had some good news on running back Cam Skattebo. According to the Giants GM, the 23-year-old RB is making good progress from his season-ending ankle injury and is expected to be ready for OTAs (organized team activities) in April.
Right now, all signs are pointing to Harbaugh and the Giants getting their core trio of Jaxson Dart, Nabers and Skattebo on the field at some point in the 2026 season.
