Giants' Brian Daboll shares alarming Daniel Jones update

Both New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll and quarterback Daniel Jones previously insisted the neck injury Jones has been dealing with since Oct. 8 wouldn't prematurely end the 26-year-old's season.

Daboll took a different approach after he confirmed Friday that Jones won't play when the 2-5 Giants host the 3-3 New York Jets this coming Sunday.

As noted by SNY and Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post, Daboll was repeatedly asked to confirm or deny if Jones will take the field again this season.

"I’m not gonna go back to that," Daboll alarmingly responded. "He’s getting better and see where he is next week. ... I don’t have a crystal ball with injuries. He is getting better and we’ll see where he is next week."

One reporter then mentioned Daboll was "less declarative" than before regarding Jones returning to the lineup at some point during the campaign.

"Yep," Daboll replied. "I just go with the information that I get, and today he is out and getting better."

Jones missed the final six games of the 2021 season with a neck problem that ultimately required him to undergo what was called a "non-football-related procedure." He suffered his latest injury playing at the Miami Dolphins in Week 5 and hasn't been cleared for contact since even though he's thrown on the practice field and participated in scout-team duties.

This past March, the Giants signed Jones to a four-year contract reportedly worth up to $160M. The club seemingly can escape that deal following the 2024 season, but it's unclear how a lingering neck injury could potentially impact the agreement.

As had been expected throughout the week, backup Tyrod Taylor will make his third consecutive start in Jones' absence. Taylor completed 18-of-29 passes for 279 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in last Sunday's 14-7 home win over the Washington Commanders.

As of Friday afternoon, OddsChecker listed the Giants as three-point underdogs against the Jets.
