A report from early December said that New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen needed "victories" to hold onto his job after Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch dismissed head coach Brian Daboll in November.
It appears the Giants notching back-to-back wins to finish the season at 4-13 was enough to save Schoen's job through the winter.
Paul Schwartz of the New York Post reported that Mara and Tisch told Schoen during a Monday morning meeting that the executive would stay in his role. According to Schwartz, individuals within the Giants who felt that 2025 rookie Jaxson Dart is a future franchise quarterback proved to be "a boon for Schoen." Previous stories claimed that Schoen "shifted his preference to Dart this spring as head coach Brian Daboll warmed to Dart as a player and person and Schoen rounded out his own evaluation."
Dart showed plenty of promise as he went 4-8 across 12 starts. However, he missed two November games with a concussion, and he was evaluated for a concussion during contests five times from August through Week 18.
Schwartz added that Giants ownership credits Schoen for acquiring star pass-rusher Brian Burns from the Carolina Panthers in March 2024. Additionally, wide receiver Malik Nabers, running backs Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Cam Skattebo and edge-rusher Abdul Carter are among the key contributors Schoen drafted over the past two years. Clearly, Mara and Tisch blame coaching and not Schoen for the fact that the Giants went 13-38 from 2023 through the 2025 season.
"Schoen will remain our general manager and continue to lead our football operations and the search for our next head coach," Mara and Tisch announced in an official statement. "Continuity and stability in the front office is important to our progress. We believe in our young core of talent, which we can build around for future success."
Before the Cleveland Browns confirmed on Monday that they had fired head coach Kevin Stefanski, it was said that he would "attract serious interest from" the Giants if he were to become available. On Monday, longtime New York sports reporter Ian O'Connor of The Athletic referred to Stefanski as "the leader in the Giants' clubhouse." O'Connor also said that the Giants have "had internal conversations about John Harbaugh."
As of Monday morning, it was unknown if Harbaugh and the Baltimore Ravens would part ways this winter. According to O'Connor, "Harbaugh would hurdle Stefanski if he's free" as it pertains to the Giants' opening.
