Giants Could Cut Vet LB In Cap Move

The New York Giants are in need of space under the salary cap to sign high-priced free agents, to-wit: a quarterback, and to sign their 2025 NFL Draft class.

One player who is viewed as to be on the bubble is veteran linebacker Bobby Okereke. Okereke is entering year three of the four-year, $40 million free agent deal he signed in 2023.

Sources such as the New York Daily News  indicated there are members in the Giants' organization who think the 28-year-old former Indianapolis Colts star has run his course in New York and his days as a Giants player are numbered.

The bell will toll before March 14. If Okereke is on the roster on March 14 he will be due a $3 million roster bonus. Joe Schoen and co-owner John Mara are going to think through this situation very carefully before they eat a contract they really do not want to hold on to.

Of course they could always approach Okereke about restructuring his contract. They could make it more cap friendly. If he does not agree, the Giants have a huge decision to make.

Should New York say goodbye to one of its fan favorites they would eat $10.9 million in cap space this season, regardless of when he is waived.  However, per overthecap.com, the Giants would gain $3.5 million this year and $9 million next year, per overthecap.com.

Okereke played in only 12 games last season due to injury. Darius Muasau filled in admirably and would more than likely inherit the position from Okereke should he be sent packing.

The Giants also have Micah McFadden in the fold and could always draft a linebacker or sign one to a cap-friendly deal in free agency.
