Giants' Daniel Jones on Kadarius Toney: 'He can be a special player'

New York Giants wide receiver and 2021 first-round draft pick Kadarius Toney has understandably become somewhat of a polarizing figure among members of the fan base.

A healthy Toney went for 10 catches and 189 receiving yards on an October afternoon against the Dallas Cowboys, but he also struggled through an injury-filled debut season which he finished with 39 total receptions for 420 yards and zero touchdowns across 10 games. Some were then annoyed when it was learned in April that Toney wasn't initially spotted at voluntary minicamp, but the 23-year-old ultimately showed up and later received praise from new head coach Brian Daboll.

Per Scott Thompson of SNY, Toney has been working off to the side while dealing with an undisclosed injury that may or may not be associated with a minor arthroscopic knee procedure that Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News mentioned last month. Regardless, quarterback Daniel Jones made it clear while speaking with reporters on Tuesday that Toney will be vital to New York's offense later this year.

"I think it’s huge to have him," Jones said of Toney. "I think in the times he was out there last year, you saw what he can do, how special he can be with the ball in his hands. I think that adds a lot to our offense to have him out there. We need him. I think he’s done a great job in meetings. He’s done a great job picking it up, learning this system. He can be a special player and we certainly need him."

As for Jones, he's been cleared for football activities and contact following the neck injury that caused him to miss the final six games of last season.
