Giants' Daniel Jones reacts to rough joint practice with Lions

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones sounded unbothered about the offense's rough showing in the team's first joint practice with the Detroit Lions on Tuesday. 

"Certainly, some things that we can sharpen up and clean up execution wise but overall, I thought we made some plays here and there," Jones said following the session, per the Giants' official website. "[We've] just got to be more consistent and take advantage of some of those opportunities we had." 

According to Connor Hughes of SNY, Jones connected on just five-of-12 passes on Tuesday, was "sacked" once and would've thrown an interception had Lions safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson properly finished the play. Jones stuck around after practice to complete additional throwing work. 

"Jones was bad," Hughes continued about the Giants' performance. "The line created very little running room for (running back) Saquon Barkley. It was, by most measures, a very bad day." 

Fair or not, Jones likely will be one of the most scrutinized signal-callers in the NFL this fall after he signed a heavily-criticized four-year contract reportedly worth up to $160M, a deal that allowed general manager Joe Schoen to retain Barkley's rights via the non-exclusive franchise tag. 

Schoen ultimately avoided giving Barkley a long-term contract and instead got the 26-year-old to sign what is basically an adjusted one-year tag worth up to $11M with incentives. 

"I think just seeing different looks," Jones said about the benefit of joint practices against opposing defenses. "Going up against different guys that you don't know as well. I think the competitive nature of these practices speeds up the game a little bit in certain situations. I think just seeing a new look, seeing a new team. You get used to practicing against your guys—your defense and what they do and to see another group is helpful. It's valuable time." 

Jones and company will again see Detroit's defense for a Wednesday practice as the teams prepare to face off in a preseason matchup at Ford Field on Friday night. If nothing else, Tuesday's developments indicate the 2019 first-round draft pick may generate headlines whenever he takes the field between now and the Week 1 home game against the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 10.
