New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is among individuals who were left shaken up by what occurred involving tight end Tommy Sweeney during Wednesday's practice.
"Yeah, that was extremely scary," Jones said about the situation, per the Giants' website. "You never want to see that on the field. I haven't been inside yet to see how he's doing but heard he's doing okay and is up, so definitely thinking about him."
Earlier in the day, the Giants confirmed that Sweeney experienced "a medical event" during practice, was "under the care of medical professionals in the Giants athletic training room" and was "stable, alert and conversant."
ESPN's Jordan Raanan shared via X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that Sweeney was "down on the field for several minutes" during what Raanan called a "scary scene."
Sweeney originally entered the NFL when the Buffalo Bills made him a seventh-round draft pick in 2019, and he spent time playing under current Giants head coach Brian Daboll when Daboll served as Buffalo's offensive coordinator up through January 2022.
Back in November 2020, the Bills confirmed Sweeney had been ruled out for the remainder of that season after it was determined he developed myocarditis following a bout with COVID-19.
According to the American Heart Association, myocarditis is "a serious though rare condition where inflammation develops in the myocardium, or middle muscular layer of the heart wall" that can "weaken the heart and its electrical system." It was unclear as of early Wednesday evening if Sweeney's latest medical event is at all related to myocarditis.
Sweeney ultimately returned to action and recorded his only regular-season touchdown catch, to date, during the 2021 season.
Per Dan Benton of Giants Wire/USA Today, Sweeney signed a one-year, $1.1M contract to join the club earlier in the offseason but wasn't guaranteed a roster spot behind TE1 Darren Waller and Daniel Bellinger.
The 28-year-old tallied a touchdown reception in New York's preseason opener against the Detroit Lions on Aug. 11 that the Giants lost 21-16.
