The New York Giants had an eventful Week 10. Their 20-17 international loss to the Carolina Panthers helped redefine rock bottom. They flew home with questions to answer across the board, from quarterback to head coach to general manager and everything in between.
However, right tackle Evan Neal got his first start of the season in the loss and fared surprisingly well, giving credence to the notion that he can start down the stretch, with offensive tackle Jermaine Eluemunor pivoting to the blind side.
That’s a decision for Week 12, when the Giants return from the bye to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In the meantime, Eluemunor is focused less on a position switch and more on making an impact in the community, further endearing himself to the New York faithful.
He spent Wednesday in Lodi, handing out turkeys with the American Eagle Food Pantry of Northern New Jersey.
“I’ve always wanted to give back, especially the way I grew up,” Eluemunor said, via Dan Duggan. “I feel like it’s part of the job in the NFL to be a part of your community and really help out those in need.”
Eluemunor, according to Duggan, is taking the position change in stride.
“I think I’m in the position I’m in because I’ve shown I can play both left tackle and right tackle, Eluemunor said. “Obviously, this season I believe I was playing right tackle at a high level. But who says I can’t do that at left tackle if I really buy into it and show, not only myself, but the rest of the league I can play left tackle at a high level, too, in a league that is desperate for tackles.”
Such a switch bodes well for Eluemunor, who’s been the team’s best lineman in a post-Andrew Thomas world. After signing a two-year, $14 million deal this offseason, the versatile tackle will have a ton of suitors if he continues to ascend.
At this point, it’s clear Eluemunor is one of general manager Joe Schoen’s biggest hits through three offseasons. His bye week endeavors only add to his appeal.
