Giants GM Dave Gettleman expected to be fired?

New York Giants general manager came into the season with rumors buzzing that this could be his last season. With the Giants sitting at 1-6 entering Week 8, Dave Gettleman’s tenure in New York could be drawing to a close.

After being put on notice toward the end of a disappointing 2019 season, Gettleman was given one last offseason to turn things around. With New York at the halfway point of its 2020 campaign, the results could lead to changes.

According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, many around the NFL believe it’s "inevitable" Gettleman will be fired this year. Ownership gave him another chance to turn things around, and the results haven’t come close to expectations set before the season.

If the Giants fire Gettleman after three seasons at the helm, they could already have a target in mind. Long a fan of how the New England Patriots have operated, which part of the reason they hired head coach Joe Judge, New York could target another personnel man from New England.

Specifically, the Giants will reportedly target Patriots personnel executive Nick Caserio. The 44-year-old has worked in New England for two decades, serving in a variety of roles.

Caserio coached the team’s wide receivers in 2007, following a three-year run as the team’s director of pro personnel (2004-06). After some time on the sidelines, he was named New England’s director of player personnel in 2008 and has worked alongside Bill Belichick in shaping one of the NFL’s greatest dynasties.

The Giants have given Gettleman plenty of chances to build a roster his way. Often a critic of analytics being involved in NFL decisions, even he was surprised he stuck around after 2019.

Gettleman has largely failed to identify talent, wasting New York’s cap space and draft picks. Of New York’s three first-round picks in 2019, Daniel Jones hasn't progressed the way the team was hoping, and DeAndre Baker is no longer in the NFL.

New York also spent the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft on running back Saquon Barkley. While he certainly has All-Pro talent, injuries have been a huge problem the past two seasons. On top of that, Gettleman passed on the likes of Minkah Fitzpatrick, Josh Allen, Quenton Nelson and Jaire Alexander.

The Giants were patient with Gettleman, and it proved costly. It would be in the organization’s best interest to go in another direction after this season, and Caserio could be a great hire.
