Giants HC Brian Daboll still refuses to make the obvious change holding New York back after loss to the 49ers

The New York Giants produced another lackluster defensive performance in Week 9 against the San Francisco 49ers.

After an entire season of poor defensive play, Giants fans are tired. They've been calling for the firing of defensive coordinator Shane Bowen for a multi-week stretch, and there has been no change from head coach Brian Daboll.

After today's half-effort performance that resulted in an easy 34-24 victory for the 49ers, Daboll was asked again if he plans to fire Bowen any time soon. Daboll opted to answer the question the same way he has all season long.

"None of us did a good enough job," Daboll told reporters. "That starts with me. We'll continue to work at it."

Will the Giants ever fire Shane Bowen?

The 49ers' offense dominated the Giants' defense despite dealing with their own injuries. Backup quarterback Mac Jones has been solid for San Francisco this season and has had no trouble dicing up the Giants' battered secondary. He completed 79% of his passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

As one would expect when facing one of the worst run defenses in the NFL, star running back Christian McCaffrey totaled 106 yards on the ground. The whole 49ers squad rushed for 159 yards on the day.

After the game, Daboll was asked if he feels there's a disconnect between the coaches and the players on what is being taught. He provided another deflection on the issue.

"We didn't get the results. Our guys are working, stuff we work on each week," Daboll stated. "It's not getting done."

An even more frustrating comment from the Giants came from defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence. After he came under fire this week from Giants legend Carl Banks for his performance, he claimed there was no lack of effort from the defense.

"I don't think there was any lack of effort," Lawrence said to the media. "Everybody played hard; we just didn't make the plays."

That claim by Lawrence on the Giants' effort is debatable, considering how little energy it felt like there was at times in this game. And the 34 points from the 49ers seem like pretty simple evidence. I'd also encourage you to focus on Lawrence during this play below.

One player who had an interesting perspective after the loss was defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux. He provided an outlook on the Giants' much-needed approach to the remainder of the season.

"I was always told, you can't really look at the position you're in," Thibodeaux told the media. "You've got to look at where you're trying to get to. All your focus has to be geared on the work that has to get done to get to the place you want to be."

It's unlikely the Giants capture any momentum this late in the season, but hopefully they can bounce back from today's lackluster performance.
