Giants legend Tiki Barber against bold idea for 2024 NFL Draft

For a mock draft updated on Monday, Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports predicted that the New York Giants will trade with the Chicago Bears to obtain the first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and select USC Trojans star quarterback Caleb Williams.

Giants legend and CBS Sports NFL analyst Tiki Barber explained on WFAN's "Evan and Tiki" program why he's against that idea even though the team may need an upgrade over starting signal-caller Daniel Jones.

"If I’m the Giants, I still feel like there are so many holes to fill," Barber said, as shared by Ryan Chichester of Audacy. "With all the free agents you have...you still need depth and starting offensive lineman. I think going all-in for the quarterback right now when you have one on the roster with three years left on his deal, even if he is injured, just doesn’t make sense."

While Jones signed a four-year contract in March 2023, the Giants reportedly can escape that deal after next season. The 26-year-old guided the club to a road playoff win last January, but he regressed this fall before he suffered a season-ending torn ACL on Nov. 5. He's also missed nine games since the start of the 2021 campaign because of worrisome neck injuries.

Jones told reporters on Monday his goal "is to be back by training camp." That same day, Giants general manager Joe Schoen revealed he plans to pick up a quarterback this offseason via free agency or the draft.

ESPN stats show that the Giants finished the regular season ranked 29th in the NFL with an average of 280.0 offensive yards per game, 30th with an average of 15.6 points scored per contest and 27th in total defense (361.7 yards surrendered per game). Such numbers would seem to prove Barber's point regarding the Giants needing to find multiple starters in the draft this spring.

It's also possible the Giants won't need to trade with any team to land a quarterback with the sixth overall pick. On Monday, CBS Sports' Ryan Wilson predicted that Jayden Daniels of the LSU Tigers will fall to the Giants at No. 6.
