John Harbaugh is weighing his next move after being fired by the Baltimore Ravens following 18 seasons and a Super Bowl championship, and the New York Giants are putting themselves in a prime position to land him.
Formal interviews are still ramping up across the NFL and only began on Monday for Harbaugh in particular. That said, the Giants already landed an early sit-down with the former Ravens coach before the start of the week.
Chris Mara, a longtime executive with the Giants, told The Athletic that he met Harbaugh at his home in the Baltimore area on Sunday for what was described as an informal lunch.
According to The Athletic's Josh Kendall and Ian O'Connor, Mara said both parties had “a lunch and informal meeting” on Sunday. The report also quotes "several sources directly involved in the process" noting that Harbaugh is "very interested" in the Giants' opening.

The meeting marked the first face-to-face contact between Harbaugh and a representative of any team since his firing.
The Athletic also reported that Giants general manager Joe Schoen had already been in contact with Harbaugh’s camp before the franchise representatives made the trip to Baltimore, with phone conversations taking place throughout last week.
On Monday, the Atlanta Falconsannounced they had conducted the first official interview with Harbaugh, a phone call with new football president and former franchise quarterback Matt Ryan.
But it was New York that won the race to secure an in-person meeting before any other team could get to talk to Harbaugh. No team other than Atlanta has yet confirmed a formal interview with Harbaugh, who should start narrowing his list of suitors this week.
This news comes on the heels of a report by The Athletic's Dianni Russini, Harbaugh spent the weekend watching film on quarterback Jaxson Dart, currently with the Giants, and Cam Ward of the Tennessee Titans.
“John Harbaugh is spending (Saturday) and the next few days watching film specifically on quarterbacks Jaxson Dart and Cam Ward,” Russini reported. “He’s also been in contact with team decision makers, while continuing to communicate with potential members of his own coaching staff.”
New York has made Harbaugh their top priority after his firing, and Mara's update only reinforces the fact that the Giants remain firmly in the mix.
