The New York Giants are making another change at running back after the Cam Skattebo drama took center stage in Week 6. Skattebo was unexpectedly left without a single touch in Sunday’s 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints after his costly fumble against the Washington Commanders the previous week.
Skattebo entered the season as New York’s leading running back but has recorded four fumbles in five games. His overtime turnover against Washington put the Giants’ potential game-winning drive in jeopardy, prompting questions about his role moving forward.
On Tuesday, the Giants reportedly released Najee Harris, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, adding another twist to a backfield that has struggled to establish a clear leader.
Harris was promoted to the starting lineup against New Orleans, but the veteran managed just four carries for two yards. Skattebo, meanwhile, played only six snaps and did not record a carry or target.

The decision to release Harris creates further uncertainty about how the Giants will distribute carries. Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary remain options, while Skattebo could have an opportunity to regain a larger role if he improves his ball security.
Head coach John Harbaugh has made clear that no running back has done enough to secure the lead role. New York’s running backs combined for just 34 yards on 14 carries against the Saints, highlighting the problems the team must address.
The Giants will now have to determine their backfield rotation ahead of their next game against the Houston Texans. Skattebo’s role will be one of the biggest questions following the latest roster move.
