The New York Giants have overcome significant injuries and become one of the NFL’s biggest surprises through Week 8. Despite losing starting quarterback Jaxson Dart for the season in Week 2, the team is 4-2-1 and currently sits in first place in the NFC East.

Throughout the first half of the season, the Giants’ backfield has been a constant storyline. Tyrone Tracy is currently on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, while Cam Skattebo has worked his way back into a major role after dealing with ball-security issues earlier in the season. Skattebo entered the Giants’ Week 8 bye coming off his best game of the season.

Against the Houston Texans in Week 7, Skattebo carried the ball 17 times for 124 yards and a touchdown, including a 42-yard rush in overtime that set up Devin Singletary’s game-winning score.

With Tracy eligible to return in Week 13, Skattebo appeared to be in line for a heavy workload over the coming weeks. However, his status has become a concern ahead of the Giants’ matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.

According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN, Skattebo worked off to the side with a trainer during Monday’s unofficial practice session after suffering a hamstring injury in the win over Houston.

Amid the injuries to Skattebo and Tracy, the Giants added more depth at the position. Raanan also shared that New York signed running back Eric Gray to its practice squad.

Gray was selected in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Giants and has played in 34 career games with New York before spending time on the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad early in the season. In his career, he has recorded 31 carries for 79 yards.

Gray is unlikely to step into a significant role, and Skattebo’s status will likely become clearer as New York begins its official practice week and releases an injury report.

If Skattebo is able to play, he will likely be asked to carry a heavy workload. If not, expect Devin Singletary and the running back depth to face a larger role.
