Giants' Malik Nabers, Brian Daboll address animated interaction

Second-year New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers and   head coach Brian Daboll seemed to get into a heated discussion during the club's disappointing 21-6 loss to the Washington Commanders on Sunday afternoon.

Following the game, both Nabers and Daboll addressed what became the most replayed Giants-related moment from the contest.

Why Malik Nabers felt he needed to speak up

"I said I was going to speak up when it was time for me to speak up," Nabers explained, per John Flanigan of SNY. "I was just trying to get guys going, trying to get everything going. I felt like we were lacking out there. The energy wasn't right, so I took it upon myself to try to boost people up. It's two competitive people going at it. He wants to win, I want to win. I feel like that's the reason he got me over here is because of how me and him are just alike, so it was two people just going at it. We trying to get the same outcome -- that’s all."

What was said between Nabers and Daboll when the Giants were trailing 14-3 didn't do much to improve the team's offense. Big Blue scored on just a pair of field goals as its defense held the high-powered Washington offense to 14 points until Deebo Samuel iced the game with a 19-yard touchdown run halfway through the fourth quarter.

Sunday's loss was the third straight time the Giants failed to score a touchdown in a season opener. Meanwhile, it sounds like Daboll could replace starting quarterback Russell Wilson with rookie Jaxson Dart sooner rather than later after Wilson completed 17-of-37 passes for 168 yards against Washington.

Nabers tallied five receptions for 71 yards in the defeat.

How Brian Daboll viewed the Malik Nabers incident

"We are two, I would say, highly competitive people," Daboll said about his animated conversation with Nabers, according to the Giants' website. "We want to get him the ball. That's all it is. It's two competitive people understanding that where we are at right now, or offensively, is not where we want to be."

Nabers wasn't afraid to publicly voice his frustrations regarding the team's offense as a rookie, and he looked downright miserable during portions of Sunday's loss. It remains to be seen if Wilson or Dart will start when the Giants play at the 0-1 Dallas Cowboys this coming Sunday.

Dallas suffered a 24-20 loss at the Philadelphia Eagles this past Thursday night.
