Giants place rookie TE Daniel Bellinger on PUP list

The New York Giants hit a figurative reset button regarding their tight end situation following the 2021 NFL season. Both 2017 first-round draft choice Evan Engram and former Minnesota Vikings Pro Bowl tight end Kyle Rudolph were allowed to depart via free agency. The Giants then spent a fourth-round selection this spring on San Diego State Aztecs product Daniel Bellinger.

It appears Big Blue will have to wait to see Bellinger in action at the team's facility this summer.

According to the league's official website, the Giants placed Bellinger on the physically unable to perform list on Thursday because of a quad injury. The club's first-year pros reported for training camp on Tuesday.

As things stand today, veterans Ricky Seals-Jones and Jordan Akins are atop the depth chart at the position for the Giants. It's unclear how long Bellinger may be sidelined with his setback.

As Josh Alper noted for Pro Football Talk, Bellinger recorded 31 catches for 357 yards and two touchdowns with the Aztecs last college season. There was likely hope the 21-year-old could, at the very least, become somewhat of a safety blanket for quarterback Daniel Jones, who had the fifth-year option attached to his rookie contract declined this spring.

Recently, the Giants have been linked with San Francisco 49ers veteran Jimmy Garoppolo in some rumors, but it's unclear if New York would make a move for Jimmy G. if Jones remains healthy through training camp and the preseason.
