Cam Skattebo had been in the midst of a breakout rookie campaign for the New York Giants before tragedy struck. The fourth-round pick out of Arizona State had become the team’s lead running back, rushing for 398 yards on 98 carries (4.1 yards per carry) with five touchdowns through the first seven games of the season. He also added 23 receptions for 189 yards and a receiving touchdown, giving the Giants much-needed versatility in their offense.
His chemistry with rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart made him a key part of New York’s offense. But during Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Skattebo’s momentum came to a sudden halt after suffering a serious lower-leg injury that silenced Lincoln Financial Field.
The injury occurred with just over eight minutes left in the second quarter when Eagles linebacker Zack Baun tackled Skattebo awkwardly, causing his right leg to twist underneath him.
The 23-year-old immediately grabbed his ankle in pain and was later carted off the field with an air cast, waving to teammates as fans applauded. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where tests confirmed a dislocated right ankle, an injury that will require surgery and likely end his season.
After the game, Skattebo took to Instagram to acknowledge the support. Sharing a post of teammates sending love his way, he captioned it:
“My guys love tall boys,” followed by a heart emoji.
Follwoing the injury, teammates surrounded Skattebo as he was carted away, showing visible emotion. Players including Dart and several defensive starters have since responded with encouragement and praise.
Dart, who shared a close bond with the running back, was especially shaken.
“That’s my boy,” Dart said postgame. “Seeing him go down like that, it’s the worst part of this game” (h/t SNY Giants).
His reaction – kneeling in shock – summed up the mood across the locker room.
Skattebo’s loss is a major setback for a Giants team already without wide receiver Malik Nabers, who suffered a season-ending torn ACL in Week 4. Beyond Skattebo’s production, he brought intensity and energy that has fueled the Giants’ new-look offense. His physicality and pass-catching ability made him one of the team’s most reliable weapons.
With Skattebo sidelined indefinitely, the Giants must now adjust their offensive approach and hope their backfield depth can keep them competitive through the remainder of the season.
As the Giants (2-6) await concrete update on Skattebo’s injury, they will return home to face the San Francisco 49ers in Week 9, with all signs pointing to the lengthened absence of their starting running back.
