New York Giants star running back Cam Skattebo caught the NFL’s attention with a physical blocking play against the Houston Texans in Week 7.
The play took place during the Giants’ 27-21 overtime victory over Houston on Sunday. Skattebo approached two defensive linemen from behind and used his strength to bring both players down.
The NFL highlighted Skattebo’s strong move in a video posted on its official Instagram account.
“@sk4ttp4ck took down two defensive linemen ,” the league wrote in the caption.
The NFL added in the video’s text overlay: “Skattebo wanted all the smoke on this blocking assignment .”
The 24-year-old running back also made an impact as a ball carrier, leading the team in rushing. He finished with a career-high 124 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries against Houston.
Skattebo scored on a 16-yard run in the fourth quarter to give New York a 21-14 lead. Houston later tied the game to force overtime.
In overtime, Skattebo broke free for a 42-yard run that moved the Giants into scoring position. Fellow running back Devin Singletary followed with a 30-yard touchdown run to seal the victory.
Skattebo, though, was involved in a contentious moment earlier in the game. Officials called him for unnecessary roughness after he lowered his helmet into Texans safety M.J. Stewart on a seven-yard run. The penalty pushed the Giants back to their own 13-yard line.
Giants coach John Harbaugh criticized the penalty and defended Skattebo’s aggressive running style. He said the second-year running back needed to run low to protect himself and the ball.
Despite the penalty, the Giants secured the victory and improved their record to 4-2-1. It placed them atop the NFC East after seven games.
New York will have a bye in Week 8 before visiting the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Nov. 8. Kickoff from Lincoln Financial Field is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET on FOX.
