New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley suffered a torn ACL early in the 2020 regular season and is working to be at his physical best for the opening week of the 2021 campaign.
While the Giants and Barkley will need to eventually have some discussions about his long-term future, the 23-year-old ball-carrier explained during a Wednesday appearance on Pro Football Talk Live that he is currently focused on his recovery and on what he can offer the Big Blue offense next September.
"To be honest, that’s the least of my worries,” Barkley said about his second NFL contract. "That’s not even on my mind right now to even have that conversation, spark that conversation up. I’m really just focusing on getting this knee ready because I want to be the best player I can be."
It's nice the 2018 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year is saying the right things ahead of Super Bowl LV, and the Giants will likely keep Barkley through 2022 via the fifth-year option attached to his contract. Barkley will, however, have plenty to prove before New York commits any real money to him for later in the decade.
Remember that current Giants coach Joe Judge just completed his first season with the organization and had no role in the franchise drafting Barkley back in 2018.
