It's believed that the New York Giants would prefer for rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart to sit behind veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston through at least a significant portion of the 2025 season.
During a Monday appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Giants safety Jevon Holland touched upon how Wilson and Winston are helping Dart learn about life in the league during springtime workouts.
"Russ and Jameis are just two individuals who have had different paths in the league but have been in the league, been in different systems,” Holland said, as shared by Chris Franklin of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. "You can just tell a different level of poise and routine day in and day out. You see them doing the same thing pre-practice and the same thing post-practice. It’s like it almost looks like it’s second nature for those two, and I’m super excited for Jaxson because he has two extremely good vets and two individuals that speak life into everybody around them. You have to raise the youth, and I know those two individuals are going to raise Jaxson into a great quarterback."
Wilson is a former Super Bowl champion who has admittedly experienced more lows than highs as an NFL QB1 over the past few years. Meanwhile, Winston never fully met the expectations many had for him when he entered the league as the first overall pick of the 2015 draft.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen have insisted that Wilson is the team's starter until further notice. Wilson most recently served as a mentor for Justin Fields when the two were with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season. Meanwhile, Winston built a reputation while with the 2024 Cleveland Browns for "grinding at practice" and for being a positive locker-room influence as that club struggled through what became a 3-14 campaign.
"Seeing Russ and Jameis in practice and going against them has been great for me because of their processes and what they’re trying to accomplish against the defense," Holland added during his comments. "It’s allowed me to really pick their brain and ask them questions so I can also have some level of growth."
Dart could leapfrog both veterans on the Big Blue depth chart as soon as October, but there's plenty he can learn from them as Wilson prepares to start New York's Week 1 matchup at the Washington Commanders on Sept. 7.
