The New York Giants are facing a major offseason challenge as star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence has officially requested a trade, according to multiple reports.
Lawrence is also expected to skip the team’s offseason workout program, signaling a clear escalation in tensions between the player and organization.
This situation has been building. The Giants and Lawrence have attempted to negotiate a new deal over the past two offseasons, but discussions have failed to produce meaningful progress.
Despite having two years remaining on his current contract—set to pay him $20 million this season—Lawrence is seeking a deal that better reflects his status as one of the league’s premier interior defenders.
General manager Joe Schoen recently acknowledged ongoing conversations but stopped short of indicating any breakthrough, leaving the standoff unresolved heading into offseason activities.
New head coach John Harbaugh has already made it clear how vital Lawrence is to the team’s identity.
Describing him as the “middle stone” of the defense, Harbaugh emphasized his importance not just as a contributor, but as the central force anchoring the unit. Losing a player of Lawrence’s caliber would represent a significant setback for a team already in transition.
Since the team drafted Lawrence in 2019, he has developed into one of the NFL’s most disruptive interior linemen. The 28-year-old has earned three Pro Bowl selections and two second-team All-Pro honors, while totaling 30.5 career sacks.
However, his 2025 season marked a downturn statistically, with just half a sack and limited impact in a difficult 4–13 campaign for New York.
Lawrence’s trade request puts pressure on the Giants to act—either by re-engaging in serious extension talks or exploring the market for a player still in his prime.
Given his résumé and positional value, any potential deal would likely command a significant return. But with a new coaching staff in place, the organization must now decide whether to rebuild around Lawrence—or move forward without one of its most important defensive pieces.
