Giants to release CB James Bradberry due to lack of trade interest?

It was reported in March that new New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen was willing to "eat" some of the $13.5 million salary attached to the contract of cornerback James Bradberry to trade him because the one-time Pro Bowl selection was on track to carry a $21.9 million cap hit for the 2022 season.

No trade occurred before or during last week's draft, and Schoen suggested during a Wednesday appearance on WFAN's "Carton & Roberts" that releasing Bradberry seems to be the inevitable conclusion to this story.

"We’re working through that right now," Schoen said, according to Ryan Morik of SNY. "His agents have been great, we’ve been in constant communication. I’ve talked to James, it’s been very professional throughout the whole process, and we should have some resolution, hopefully, by the end of the week.

"It’s unfortunate, because he’s a great kid… I’ve always spoken very highly of the kid. Listen, he’s a starting corner in the league. It’s just, where we are financially, we still gotta sign our draft picks, we gotta be able to sign our practice squad, and then have replacement costs early in the season."

Morik notes the Giants will save $11.4 million in cap space by cutting Bradberry but would've saved $13.4 million had they been able to trade the 28-year-old. Schoen admitted on Wednesday he "thought there would be more interest" among would-be buyers.

Bradberry recorded 47 total tackles, four interceptions, two fumble recoveries and 17 pass breakups with the Giants last season.
