Giants' Younghoe Koo explains hilariously botched field goal attempt in loss to Patriots

Plenty went wrong for the New York Giants during their 33-15 loss to the New England Patriots on Monday night that dropped the Giants to 2-11 on the season.

Probably the most embarrassing moment for the visitors occurred halfway through the second quarter when Younghoe Koo attempted a 47-yard field goal. Koo planted his left foot for the kick, but his swinging right foot then struck the ground in front of the ball.

Following the game, Koo addressed the moment.

Younghoe Koo "pulled up" on botched field goal vs. Patriots

"I was approaching the ball and, cold weather, the ball kind of slipped out at the bottom, so it was moving," Koo explained, per Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post. "I wasn’t able to kick through the ball. The ball was moving when I was driving to it, so I just pulled up on it."

Koo is currently with the Giants because Graham Gano is on injured reserve. The Giants have also had Jude McAtamney on the active roster this fall, but he was released from the practice squad in November after he missed three of 12 extra points.

Giants punter Jamie Gillan was serving as the holder for the field goal on Monday night. After Koo failed to make contact with the ball, Gillan grabbed it and then looked down the field for a potential pass. However, he was tackled for a 13-yard loss that resulted in a turnover on downs.

"Jamie did a good job of catching it and putting it back," Koo added, "but, at that point, it was too late."

A "what could have been" moment for the Giants?

Had Koo made his field goal, the Giants would've turned what was previously a 17-0 deficit into a 17-10 hole. Several minutes after the non-kick occurred, Patriots quarterback Drake Maye hit wide receiver Kyle Williams for a 33-yard touchdown pass. New England later converted a pair of field-goal attempts before halftime to essentially put the game to bed.

It's unclear if Koo or somebody else will be kicking for the Giants following their Week 14 bye. Big Blue next hosts the Washington Commanders (3-9) on Dec. 14.
