Green Bay Packers: Former 3rd Round Pick Marshawn Lloyd Suffers Injury, Situation Becomes More Complicated

One of the biggest questions surrounding the Green Bay Packers this offseason and preseason is how their running back room will shake out. Josh Jacobs, of course, is the undisputed starting running back, having made the Pro Bowl in his first season with the Packers, the third of his career. Additionally, the former NFL rushing champion is entering the second year of a four-year $48 million contract, making his spot as the starter all but guaranteed.

But, behind Jacobs, there are some questions as to what players will make the 53-man roster. Typically, the Packers (and NFL teams in general) carry three running backs onto their regular season rosters, and Green Bay currently has three good candidates behind Jacobs to fill the other two spots.

Marshawn Lloyd Is Expected to Have a Significant Role for the Green Bay Packers

As Packers fans are aware, Green Bay drafted Lloyd in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, expecting him to at least compete to be their backup running back. Unfortunately, though, a hamstring injury in training camp limited what he could do, and an ankle injury in the only game he played (Week Two) kept him out for weeks.

With Lloyd on the shelf, Emanuel Wilson was the Packers’ running back and had a good season, rushing for 502 yards and four touchdowns. Chris Brooks served as the team’s third running back.

The third round pick, though, ended up missing the rest of the season due to needing an emergency appendectomy right as he was set to return from his ankle injury.

2025 was supposed to be different. Healthy and recovered, Lloyd was supposed to compete for the backup job again with Wilson and Brooks.

But whether or not he will be able to is yet to be seen.

In the only game in which he played last season, Lloyd had six carries for 15 yards. Ironically, he also had six carries for 15 yards in Green Bay’s preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday afternoon.

And as happened in Week Two last season, which was also against the Colts, Lloyd had to leave the game early with an injury.

When asked if Lloyd was okay, head coach Matt LaFleur simply said, “We’ll see.”

Obviously, if Lloyd misses any time, the Packers will roll with Wilson and Brooks as their backup running backs. But the fact that Lloyd is a third round pick who has yet to complete a single NFL game is worrisome. It is not that Green Bay does not have other backs. They do. But they expected more from Lloyd, and unfortunately his injuries prevented him from meeting those expectations last season.

If they do so again, well, it certainly complicates things regarding his future.
