The Green Bay Packers have taken the NFL world by storm, starting the 2025 regular season 2-0 behind two dominant victories over two of the NFC’s best teams from a season ago. They dismantled the Detroit Lions (15-2 in 2024) 27-13 in Week One, and handily beat the Washington Commanders (who played in the NFC Championship) 27-18 on Thursday night.
Each game’s final score is not indicative of just how dominant Green Bay was. Of course, the Packers defense, highlighted by the stellar play of Micah Parsons, was the story in each contest. But one should not overlook the play of the offense, and quarterback Jordan Love in particular, when assessing how great the team has been.
The selection of Love in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft was a controversial one considering the fact that Aaron Rodgers, a future Pro Football Hall of Famer, was entrenched as the Packers starting quarterback. The decision continued to hover as questionable in the two seasons following the pick as Rodgers won two consecutive NFL MVP Awards.
But Green Bay was merely doing what it did when they selected Rodgers himself: ensuring they had a plan in place when they believed it would be time to move on. Many recall that the four-time MVP himself was selected in the 2005 NFL Draft while Brett Favre was still playing at a high level in Green Bay, and the reactions then were similar to what they were when Love was taken.
Favre, of course, is currently a Pro Football Hall of Famer, and his standard of play set the bar high for Packers quarterbacks. Rodgers arguably raised the bar with his own incredible play, and fans are expecting Love to do the same.
And while it is unfair to compare quarterbacks across different eras, the fact remains that Love is trying to at least match the legacy of his two legendary predecessors. Fortunately, the numbers show that, so far, he is doing just that.
The game against Washington on Thursday with Love’s 35th career start. He completed 19 of 31 passes for 292 passes, two touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 113.9 passer rating. On the 2025 NFL season, he has a 66.0% completion percentage, 480 passing yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions and 120.0 passer rating.
Through 35 career starts, his numbers compare favorably to those of Rodgers and Favre:
Jordan Love | Aaron Rodgers | Brett Favre | |
Record | 20-15 | 19-16 | 20-15 |
Completion % | 63.6% | 64.6% | 62.3% |
Yards | 8218 | 9,231 | 7,817 |
Touchdowns | 62 | 63 | 44 |
Interceptions | 23 | 23 | 42 |
Passer Rating | 96.6 | 98.1 | 78.8 |
As one can see, Love’s numbers are very close to Rodgers’ through 35 games, and are superior to those of Favre in the same time frame.
As mentioned, all three began their careers in different eras, so the comparison can only tell so much of the story. That being said, it certainly seems as if the Packers hit a home run at quarterback for the third time in a row.
