Green Bay Packers running back MarShawn Lloyd started the offseason activities healthy. He’s looked good in training camp. Unfortunately, the injury bug just won’t get away from him.
Last Sunday, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said that the former USC Trojans star running back “gonna miss some time,” following a 23-19 win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 2 of the NFL preseason. Lloyd played in that game and even had a catch for 33 yards in the second period, but he apparently got hurt while trying to make that play. Now dealing with a hamstring injury, the immediate outlook for Lloyd for Week 1 of the 2025 NFL regular season isn’t looking good.
This is simply not ideal for the Packers and, most especially, to Lloyd, who is looking to bounce back strong from an injury-riddled NFL rookie campaign in 2024. He only played a game last season due to injuries and an emergency appendectomy following a stint on the injury list.
A reader of the Packers’ official website asked insider Mike Spofford about what Green Bay could do with Lloyd amid another injury by the running back heading into the season.
Here’s the question and Spofford’s answer:
What’s your guess on how GM and MLF will handle the MarShawn Lloyd roster spot, with the cut down a week away. Active roster? IR? Other?
Depending on how long he’ll be out, one option would be to put him on IR at final cuts with the designation to return. Teams can do that with up to two players who won’t count against the initial 53, but those two would count against the total of eight players allowed to come back from IR during the course of the season.
If Lloyd misses Week 1, the Packers may give top running back Josh Jacobs even more load in the rushing attack, though they also still have Emanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks — at least as of this writing.
