Green Bay Packers Jeff Hafley Raves About Javon Bullard
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

One of the new pieces that Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley will be working with this season is safety Javon Bullard. A second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Georgia, Bullard is someone who should be a major part of the team’s defensive game plan from Day 1.

Javon Bullard looks to be the perfect complement to Xavier McKinney, the team’s prized free agent signing earlier this offseason. They could be interchangeable in the defensive backfield thanks to their versatility and ability to excel in several roles.

Last season, McKinney played every snap for the Giants on defense and lined up all over the formation. He is excellent in coverage, playing perimeter corner in some formations, and isn’t afraid to mix it up in the run game.

Javon Bullard carries a lot of the same qualities, as he was used all over the Georgia formation last season. He is someone that Jeff Hafley has been a fan of for a long time. While at Boston College as head coach, Bullard is a player the Eagles attempted to recruit.

“Loved his tape. Loved the way he played, loved the playstyle. Loved the versatility. He’s a physical guy. He can run. He can cover. He can play deep. He can play in the slot. He can blitz. He’s bigger when you see him. He’s thick, strong. The best part of it is, you don’t really know what you’re getting until you get into a meeting room with him. He’s a sharp guy. His ability to learn and process during those two days was impressive. When you get a guy who can play that fast and can take what he learned in the meeting room and bring it out onto the field, and he’s got a chance. Small little glimpse of what we’re going to get when they get here, but excited to have him.” (H/T Zack Kruse of Packers Wire)

The safety position was one the Green Bay Packers were determined to upgrade this offseason. It has been a weakness in recent seasons, but could quickly turn into a strength for the team in 2024 and beyond.

The additions of McKinny and Javon Bullard were great, but the team did not stop there. Day 3 picks were used on Evan Williams out of Oregon and Kitan Oladapo out of Oregon State.

Jeff Hafley is going to be able to mix and match his safeties based on the opponent and matchup. Each has different strengths, giving him a diverse and talented group to work with in his first season as defensive coordinator.
