Green Bay Packers Quarterback Makes a Strong Impression

Does Green Bay Have a Starting-Caliber QB with Kyle McCord

Kyle McCord is entering his second year in the NFL and is already on his second team. He was drafted in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. McCord spent the entire season on the Eagles practice squad, before eventually signing with Green Bay in January.

McCord’s College Career

Kyle McCord had an interesting college career. He played at Ohio State for three years and Syracuse for one. He sat behind C.J. Stroud for most of his first two years, then was named the starter ahead of the 2023 season. McCord performed well on the stat sheet, throwing for 3100 yards, 24 touchdowns, and only six interceptions. Ohio State even went 11-2. But unfortunately for McCord, that isn’t good enough in Columbus. He entered the transfer portal in the offseason.

After transferring to Syracuse, McCord came into his own. He lit the ACC on fire, throwing for 4700 yards and 34 touchdowns and was named second-team All-ACC. The breakthrough season proved he could play at a high level, leading him to being selected in the NFL Draft.

Making His Preseason Opportunity Count

McCord has been with Green Bay since January, and his familiarity with the system is showing. Despite getting sacked twice in the preseason opener against Pittsburgh, he still threw for over 100 yards while completing 12 of his 16 passes. He didn’t play the entire game, but still managed to lead the Packers in passing.

By no means was his performance one that had heads turning, but it showed he can play in an NFL game and hold his own. And at this point in his career, that is all he needs to do. He isn’t being asked to start for Green Bay, he’s simply being asked to be capable of weathering the storm if Jordan Love and Tyrod Taylor are injured.

Packers Roster Spot Looming

McCord’s strong showing is even more important today, as Green Bay recently cut Kyron Drones, their other training camp quarterback. Drones struggled in the few opportunities he was given. He played just six snaps and was sacked three times. This decision to cut him shows the Packers believe McCord is their clear QB3 as the regular season approaches.

With a roster spot looking likely, McCord has already proved he is a better player than he was in 2025. He was cut by Philadelphia before the season even began. Now he’s getting a real opportunity in Green Bay, and he’s already making the most of it. The next two preseason games are ever so important for McCord. He needs to show the Packers that they made the right move by cutting Drones and choosing him as their current QB3.

One solid preseason game won’t keep McCord in the NFL forever, but it puts him in a better position than he was a year ago. Green Bay appears to have their three quarterbacks in Jordan Love, Tyrod Taylor, and Kyle McCord. If McCord can continue to show potential against Denver and Arizona, then he could find himself in Green Bay for the long run. The goal for the second year quarterback is clear: Show that you belong in this league over the next two weeks.
